Dry January – January 1

Have you ever heard of Dry January? If, like us, you live in the UK (or spend most of your time here), you know that there’s a special relationship to be had with alcohol.

According to Alcohol Change UK, the charity leading the Dry January Challenge, there are over half a million dependent alcohol drinkers in the UK. Out of those, less than 1 in 5 receives treatment. Even more, almost a quarter (24%) of adults in England and Scotland drink over the medical guidelines for alcohol consumption regularly.

Another sad statistic from the charity is that England saw 1,2 million alcohol-related hospital admissions in 2017/2018, 3% more than the previous year. As such, we are all in favour of the Dry January challenge – a whole month of no alcohol, to reset our relationship with our bodies (and our vices!)

On top of saving money spent on both the drinks and the taxis home, those who participated in the challenge in past years have said that they felt better, more energised and even slept better. Sounds like a win all around!
