World Braille Day – January 4

World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4th, the date that coincides with Louis Braille’s birthday. You guessed it – he’s the inventor of the Braille system. Louis lost his sight after a childhood accident and invented the first iteration of his system when he was only 15 years old.

Braille is a tactile writing/reading system used by the visually impaired. Although it has been slowly replaced by smartphones in modern times, as many as 1 in 10 visually impaired individuals still use Braille around the world.

World Braille Day is celebrated as a reminder for people and businesses around the world to offer accessible options for those with visuals impairments and practice inclusion as a way of life in everything they do.
