Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2021 – March 1-7

Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) exists because, as with many other mental health problems, eating disorders are not immediately visible. Many people suffer in silence. In fact, an estimated 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder, which greatly affects their daily lives and the lives of the people surrounding them.

Around 5 million people are struggling as they are trying to help a loved one with an eating disorder. Beat, UK’s eating disorder charity aims to help both people suffering from the disorder and their loved ones.

Latest Research

The causes of eating disorders are not as simplistic as someone following thin models on Instagram or being too much of a perfectionist. The latest research reveals that genes also play an important role in eating disorders, especially in anorexia nervosa, and that some people are predisposed to eating disorders. However, the environment people live in or difficult life situations play a significant role too as they can determine which genes are activated and when. More research is needed to fully understand eating disorders and how to help those suffering.

How to Get Involved

Fundraising, directly donating, campaigning, volunteering – there are many ways to get involved! Some people run, trek, swim or skydive. Others organise bake sales, pamper nights or decide to do their own thing. Whatever you choose to do, know that it will help raise awareness about this disorder. The Beat website is the best place to start looking for ways in which you can take part in EDAW and how to get in touch with others wishing to support this cause.
